Join Us

This is a computational group. We do not have a wet lab. If you join us, you will write code every day — Python, R, Bash, and whatever else the problem needs. You will not pipette.

This is worth stating clearly because it shapes who will thrive here. If you want to learn bioinformatics, evolutionary genomics, and structural biology as the primary scientific activity — not as a support tool for experiments — this is the right place.

What we look for

In every role, we care most about intellectual independence and rigour. We want people who:

  • are genuinely curious about evolutionary biology and want to understand mechanism, not just find patterns
  • write clean, reproducible code and take data integrity seriously
  • can read a paper critically and identify what it does and does not show
  • are comfortable with uncertainty and with projects that take a long time to mature

Prior experience with microbiology or phages is not required. Strong computational skills and an evolutionary mindset matter more.

PhD positions

We recruit PhD students through the doctoral programme at the Małopolska Centre of Biotechnology (MCB), Jagiellonian University.

PhD projects in the group focus on:

  • Computational characterisation and prediction of phage receptor-binding protein function
  • Evolutionary genomics of Klebsiella phages: recombination, mosaicism, and host range
  • Development of bioinformatics pipelines for viral genome analysis

To enquire about PhD opportunities, send an email with your CV, a brief description of your computational background, and a paragraph explaining why you are interested in our work specifically. Vague expressions of interest are unlikely to receive a response.

Postdoctoral positions

We currently have no open advertised postdoc positions. However, we are always interested in hearing from strong candidates who want to apply for independent fellowship funding to work in the group.

Relevant schemes include:

  • Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowships (European Commission)
  • NCN Polonez Bis (National Science Centre Poland)
  • HFSP Long-Term Fellowships (Human Frontier Science Program)
  • EMBO Postdoctoral Fellowships

If you are interested in applying for one of these with us as host, get in touch well before any deadline — fellowship applications require real preparation time and we will only support applications we believe have a genuine chance of success.

MSc students

We take MSc students through Jagiellonian University. If you are enrolled at JU (or another Kraków university) and are looking for a computational thesis project in microbial genomics or phage biology, send a short email introducing yourself.
